A dental crown is a custom cap that covers a whole tooth to hold it together and restore its shape. It usually takes two visits a couple of weeks apart and is used when a tooth is cracked, worn down, heavily filled, or has had a root canal.
The first visit shapes the tooth and fits a temporary. The lab makes the permanent crown to match your neighbouring teeth, and the second visit cements it in place.
The honest test for whether you need one: a filling replaces missing tooth, a crown replaces missing strength. Once too little healthy tooth remains around a filling, that tooth will eventually split.

Dental Crowns questions, answered.
Ten to fifteen years is typical, and many last considerably longer. Grinding, decay at the margin where crown meets tooth, and gum recession are the usual reasons one needs replacing. Cleaning that margin carefully is the single most useful thing you can do for it.
Two, usually about two weeks apart. The first shapes the tooth and fits a temporary crown, the second cements the permanent one. If your temporary comes loose in between, call us and we'll recement it quickly, often the same day.
The tooth is fully numb for the preparation, so you feel pressure rather than pain. Some tenderness in the gum for a day or two afterwards is normal. If the tooth was already inflamed, it can stay sensitive for a few weeks while it settles.
If enough healthy tooth remains around the cavity to support a filling, a filling is the better and cheaper choice. If the walls of the tooth are thin, cracked, or the filling would cover most of the chewing surface, a crown prevents the split that's otherwise coming. We'll show you the X-ray.
The crown itself can't decay, but the natural tooth underneath and the margin at the gum line absolutely can. That's the most common way crowns fail. Floss around it daily and keep your checkups, and we'll catch any margin breakdown while it's still small.
