Root canal therapy is the removal of infected or dying nerve tissue from inside a tooth, followed by cleaning and sealing the canals. It usually takes sixty to ninety minutes in one visit and is used when decay, a crack, or trauma has reached the nerve.

The procedure is done with the tooth fully numb, so it feels similar to having a large filling. The severe pain patients remember is the infection beforehand, and it usually eases dramatically within a day. Some tenderness to biting for a few days afterwards is normal and settles with ibuprofen.
Sixty to ninety minutes for most teeth, in a single visit. Molars with curved or extra canals sometimes need longer or a second appointment. We'll tell you which category your tooth is in after the X-ray, before we begin.
On back teeth, almost always. Removing the nerve and the decay leaves the tooth more brittle, and chewing force splits unprotected molars surprisingly often. Front teeth with small access openings can sometimes be restored with a filling instead. We'll tell you which applies.
Most people go back to work the same day. Expect tenderness when biting on that tooth for two to four days, managed easily with over-the-counter pain relief. Eat on the other side until the crown is fitted. Call us if pain increases after day three rather than easing.
Extraction is cheaper up front, but the gap then needs an implant or bridge to stop neighbouring teeth drifting, and that costs more than the root canal would have. Keeping your own tooth is nearly always the better outcome when the tooth is restorable.
