How long does it take to heal?

The gum surface closes over in one to two weeks and most soreness is gone within three or four days. The bone underneath continues remodelling for several months, which is why implant timing is often planned around that. Follow the aftercare closely for the first forty-eight hours.

What is dry socket and how do I avoid it?

Dry socket is when the blood clot in the socket dislodges, leaving bone exposed. It's painful and usually starts three to five days after. Avoid it by not smoking, not using straws, not spitting forcefully, and not rinsing hard for the first two days. Call us if pain worsens rather than fading.

What should I eat after an extraction?

Soft, cool food for the first day: yoghurt, eggs, soup that isn't hot, mashed potato, smoothies eaten with a spoon rather than a straw. Chew on the other side. Most people are back to normal food within three or four days, easing into it.

Do I need to replace the tooth?

For back teeth, usually yes. Neighbouring teeth drift into the space, the opposing tooth drops down, and your bite changes over a few years. Front teeth almost always get replaced. We'll talk through implant, bridge and partial denture options before the extraction, not after.
