The short answer on dental fillings.
A dental filling is the removal of decay from a tooth and the rebuilding of the space with a tooth-colored composite. It usually takes about an hour for one or two teeth and is used when a cavity has broken through enamel but the tooth is still structurally sound.
We match the composite to the shade of your tooth, place it in layers, and cure each layer with a light. When it's done, most people can't point out which tooth was treated.
The size matters. A small cavity caught at a checkup is a straightforward filling. The same cavity two years later can need a crown instead, which costs several times more.
Who needs dental fillings?
If any of these sound familiar, it's worth a conversation. Renew Dental Loft sees patients from Schaumburg, Hoffman Estates, Roselle and Streamwood seven days a week.
- A checkup found a cavity
- You feel a sharp catch when your tongue runs over a tooth
- Cold or sweet food gives you a quick zing in one spot
- An old filling has cracked, chipped or fallen out
- You can see a dark spot or a small hole in a tooth
What to expect at your appointment.
Times are estimates. We see one patient at a time, so nothing here happens while your dentist is working in another room.

What dental fillings changes.
One visit
You walk out with the tooth finished, not a temporary.
Looks like a tooth
Composite is shade matched, so no silver showing when you laugh.
Conserves tooth structure
Composite bonds, so less healthy tooth has to be removed than with older materials.
Stops the decay spreading
Left alone, decay reaches the nerve and the fix gets much bigger.
How much does dental fillings cost in Schaumburg?
We don't publish a price, because quoting a number before we've looked at your mouth would be a guess. Here's what actually moves the figure, and how to get a real one.
- Cost depends on how many surfaces of the tooth are involved: a one-surface filling costs less than a three-surface one
- Back teeth generally cost more than front teeth because access is harder
- Most PPO plans cover composite fillings at roughly 70 to 80% after your deductible
- Membership members receive a discount on fillings
We file claims with most major PPO plans. If you're uninsured, our membership plan is $499 or $699 a year and includes exams, X-rays and cleanings plus a discount on treatment. See what the membership plan covers.

Dental Fillings questions, answered.
About an hour for one or two teeth, including numbing and bite checks. Several fillings in the same quadrant can often be done in one longer appointment, which is usually more convenient than three separate visits. We'll tell you the plan at your exam.
Commonly seven to ten years, sometimes much longer. Lifespan depends on the size of the filling, where it is, whether you grind your teeth, and how well the area is kept clean. We check every filling at each visit and replace them when the edges start to break down.
The injection is the part most people notice, and it's brief. After that the tooth is numb and you should feel pressure and vibration but not pain. Tell us if you feel anything sharp and we'll add more anaesthetic. Nitrous oxide is available if you'd like it.
Composite is fully hardened before you leave, so you can eat as soon as the numbness wears off, usually two to three hours. Eating while numb risks biting your cheek or tongue. Some sensitivity to cold for a week or two is normal.
We replace them when they're failing: cracked, leaking, decayed underneath, or with a fractured tooth around them. We don't recommend replacing sound amalgam fillings purely for appearance, because that means drilling out healthy tooth. If you want them changed anyway, we'll discuss it honestly.
