The short answer on dental sealants.
A dental sealant is a thin resin coating painted into the chewing grooves of back teeth to block decay. It takes about ten minutes for a few teeth and is used most often on children's permanent molars, though adults with deep, unfilled grooves benefit too.
The grooves on molars are often narrower than a toothbrush bristle, which is why so many first cavities start there. A sealant turns that valley into a smooth surface.
No drilling and no numbing are involved. We clean the tooth, place the resin, and cure it with a light.
Who needs dental sealants?

How much does dental sealants cost in Schaumburg?
We don't publish a price, because quoting a number before we've looked at your mouth would be a guess. Here's what actually moves the figure, and how to get a real one.
- Sealants cost a fraction of the filling they're designed to prevent
- Cost is per tooth, so four molars cost more than one
- Most PPO plans cover sealants for children on permanent molars, often fully
- Adult sealants are less commonly covered, so we'll quote them before placing
We file claims with most major PPO plans. If you're uninsured, our membership plan is $499 or $699 a year and includes exams, X-rays and cleanings plus a discount on treatment. See what the membership plan covers.

Dental Sealants questions, answered.
Commonly five to ten years, though they need checking at every visit. Chewing wears them down at the edges, and a worn sealant can be repaired or replaced in a few minutes. We look at them at each cleaning and tell you if one needs topping up.
Around age six, when the first permanent molars come through, and again around age twelve for the second molars. Sealing them soon after they erupt gives the best protection, because that's when the grooves are cleanest and decay hasn't started.
Yes, if the molars still have deep grooves and no fillings. Once a tooth has been drilled and filled, a sealant is no longer the right tool. We'll tell you at your exam whether your back teeth are still good candidates.
No. There's no drilling and no injection. The tooth is cleaned, a gel is applied and rinsed, then the resin is painted on and hardened with a light. Most children are surprised by how quickly it's over.
No. They protect the chewing surface only. Cavities between teeth still need flossing to prevent, and gum health still needs brushing along the gum line. Think of a sealant as covering the one spot a brush struggles to reach.
