The short answer on fluoride treatments.
A fluoride treatment is a concentrated varnish painted onto clean teeth to strengthen enamel and slow early decay. It takes about two minutes and is used at the end of a cleaning, especially for children, people with dry mouth, and anyone with a recent run of cavities.
Modern varnish sets on contact and tastes far better than the foam trays you may remember. You can eat and drink almost right away, though we'll ask you to skip anything hot or crunchy for a few hours.
It isn't only for kids. Adults on medications that cause dry mouth, or with exposed root surfaces, benefit at least as much.
Who needs fluoride treatments?
If any of these sound familiar, it's worth a conversation. Renew Dental Loft sees patients from Schaumburg, Hoffman Estates, Roselle and Streamwood seven days a week.
- Your child has just had permanent molars come in
- You've had two or more new cavities in the past couple of years
- Your mouth feels dry from medication or a medical condition
- Your gums have receded and the root surfaces are sensitive
- You wear braces or aligners and cleaning around them is harder

What fluoride treatments changes.
Slows early decay
Fluoride can help remineralise a soft spot before it becomes a hole.
Reduces sensitivity
Especially helpful on exposed root surfaces.
Very quick
It adds a couple of minutes to a visit you're already having.
Safe for children
Varnish is applied in a small, measured amount rather than swallowed from a tray.
How much does fluoride treatments cost in Schaumburg?
We don't publish a price, because quoting a number before we've looked at your mouth would be a guess. Here's what actually moves the figure, and how to get a real one.
- Fluoride is one of the least expensive preventive services we offer
- Most PPO plans cover it fully for children, and some cover it for adults with documented risk
- Adults whose plan excludes it usually find it costs less than a takeout dinner
- Ask about it when you book, and we'll check your coverage before the visit
We file claims with most major PPO plans. If you're uninsured, our membership plan is $499 or $699 a year and includes exams, X-rays and cleanings plus a discount on treatment. See what the membership plan covers.

Fluoride Treatments questions, answered.
Many do. If you take medication that dries your mouth, have receding gums with exposed roots, wear aligners, or have had recent cavities, professional fluoride measurably lowers your risk. Adults with no recent decay and good saliva flow can usually skip it.
You can eat soft, room-temperature food right away. Avoid hot drinks, alcohol, and hard or crunchy food for about four hours so the varnish stays on the teeth. Brush and floss as normal that night.
Professionally applied varnish is safe and is recommended by the American Dental Association for children at risk of decay. The amount used is small and painted directly onto the teeth. Tell us your child's age and any fluoride they already get from water or toothpaste.
Twice a year alongside cleanings is typical for people at normal risk. Every three or four months makes sense for high-risk patients, including children with several fillings and adults with dry mouth. We'll suggest an interval after your exam.
The varnish itself leaves a temporary dull or yellowish film that brushes off that evening. It doesn't stain enamel. The mottling people worry about comes from swallowing too much fluoride during childhood tooth development, not from varnish applied at the office.
