The short answer on sports guards.
A sports guard is a custom-fitted plastic shield worn over the upper teeth during contact sport. Getting one takes a ten-minute scan or impression plus a short fitting visit, and it's used by anyone playing hockey, football, basketball, wrestling, martial arts or lacrosse.
Store-bought boil-and-bite guards are better than nothing, but they're bulky, they loosen, and kids end up chewing them or leaving them in a bag. A custom guard is thinner where it can be and thicker where it needs to be.
We can make one in team colors, which sounds trivial and is a surprisingly reliable way to get a twelve-year-old to keep wearing it.
Who needs sports guards?
If any of these sound familiar, it's worth a conversation. Renew Dental Loft sees patients from Schaumburg, Hoffman Estates, Roselle and Streamwood seven days a week.
- Your child plays a contact or stick sport
- You play adult league hockey, basketball or rugby
- Your current guard makes it hard to breathe or talk
- You've already chipped a tooth playing sport
- You wear braces and need protection that works around them

What sports guards changes.
Real protection
Custom thickness where impacts land, rather than uniform bulk.
Stays in place
No constant re-seating with the tongue during play.
Easier to breathe and talk
Which is the main reason kids actually keep them in.
Protects dental work too
Veneers, crowns and braces all cost more to replace than a guard.
How much does sports guards cost in Schaumburg?
We don't publish a price, because quoting a number before we've looked at your mouth would be a guess. Here's what actually moves the figure, and how to get a real one.
- A custom guard costs more than a drugstore version and far less than repairing a front tooth
- Cost depends on the thickness and whether it's made for braces
- Some PPO plans include an athletic guard benefit for dependents, and we'll check yours
- Membership members receive a discount on guards
We file claims with most major PPO plans. If you're uninsured, our membership plan is $499 or $699 a year and includes exams, X-rays and cleanings plus a discount on treatment. See what the membership plan covers.

Sports Guards questions, answered.
Yes, for anyone playing regularly. A custom guard fits the actual shape of your teeth, so it stays seated on impact, doesn't restrict breathing, and gets worn instead of pocketed. Compare the cost to a single knocked-out front tooth and the maths is straightforward.
An adult guard often lasts two or three seasons with reasonable care. A growing child usually needs a new one each year or two as teeth erupt and the jaw changes. Bring it to your checkups and we'll tell you when it's due for replacement.
Yes, and you should. Guards for braces are made with extra space to accommodate the brackets and to protect your lips from them. Let us know at booking so we build it correctly the first time.
Rinse it with cool water right after use, brush it gently with a toothbrush and mild soap, and let it dry before it goes in the case. Never use hot water or leave it in a car in summer, because heat warps the fit permanently.
It's not designed for that. Night grinding needs a harder, differently shaped night guard that manages the bite over hours of pressure. If you grind, ask us about a night guard instead and we'll take the right kind of impression.
