Most often clenching and grinding, which overwork the muscles that close your jaw. Stress, poor sleep, an uneven bite, arthritis in the joint, and injury all contribute. Because the causes stack, treatment usually combines a guard with habit changes rather than one single fix.
Not necessarily. A guard reliably reduces muscle pain and protects teeth, but a click coming from the disc inside the joint may continue. Clicking without pain or locking is common and often needs no treatment at all. Clicking with pain or catching deserves an evaluation.
Many patients notice less morning soreness within two to four weeks of wearing a guard nightly. Muscle pain that's been building for years can take a couple of months to settle. If there's no improvement after six to eight weeks, we reassess rather than just waiting longer.
Soft over-the-counter guards can make clenching worse for some people, because a chewy surface invites the muscles to grip harder. They also fit loosely, which shifts teeth over time. A custom hard guard costs more and behaves very differently.
