The short answer on digital x-rays.
A digital dental X-ray is an image taken with a sensor instead of film, showing decay, bone levels and infection that an eye exam can't see. It takes about five minutes and is used at routine visits, before most treatment, and any time you have unexplained pain.
The images appear on the screen beside your chair in a second or two, so we can point at exactly what we're talking about instead of describing it.
Digital sensors use noticeably less radiation than the film they replaced. We still only take images when they will actually change what we do next.
Who needs digital x-rays?
If any of these sound familiar, it's worth a conversation. Renew Dental Loft sees patients from Schaumburg, Hoffman Estates, Roselle and Streamwood seven days a week.
- You have pain and we can't see a cause on the surface
- You're a new patient with no records from a previous dentist
- You have a tooth that's been treated before and now feels different
- You're being assessed for implants, extractions or a root canal
- Your last set of X-rays is more than a year or two old
What to expect at your appointment.
Times are estimates. We see one patient at a time, so nothing here happens while your dentist is working in another room.

The image goes on the screen in front of you, not into a folder.

Stored images let us spot changes between visits.
How much does digital x-rays cost in Schaumburg?
We don't publish a price, because quoting a number before we've looked at your mouth would be a guess. Here's what actually moves the figure, and how to get a real one.
- X-rays are included in the $229 new patient visit
- Cost depends on how many images are needed: two bitewings is very different from a full series
- Most PPO plans cover diagnostic X-rays at or near 100%, within frequency limits
- All diagnostic X-rays are included on both membership tiers
We file claims with most major PPO plans. If you're uninsured, our membership plan is $499 or $699 a year and includes exams, X-rays and cleanings plus a discount on treatment. See what the membership plan covers.

Digital X-Rays questions, answered.
Digital dental X-rays deliver a very small dose, well below what you absorb from normal background radiation over a few days. We use a lead apron and thyroid collar, and we only take images when they'll affect a decision. Tell us if you're pregnant and we'll postpone anything non-urgent.
Adults with healthy teeth typically need bitewings every one to two years and a full series every three to five. If you get cavities often, have gum disease, or are mid-treatment, more frequent images make sense. Your history sets the interval, not a calendar rule.
Yes, please do. Recent images save you a retake and give us history to compare against. Ask your previous office to email them to info@renewdentalloft.com before your appointment, or bring them on a disc or drive.
They shouldn't. The sensor edge can press against the floor of your mouth or the roof, which some people find awkward for a few seconds. If you have a strong gag reflex, say so and we'll adjust the technique or the sensor size.
Decay between teeth, bone loss from gum disease, infection at the tip of a root, cysts, impacted wisdom teeth and problems under existing fillings and crowns. All of that is invisible from the surface until it becomes painful.
