The short answer on periodontal treatment.
Periodontal treatment is deep cleaning below the gum line to remove the bacteria and tartar causing gum disease. It usually takes one or two visits of about an hour each and is used when gums bleed, recede, or measure deeper than three millimetres around the teeth.
Gum disease is quiet. There's rarely pain until teeth start to loosen, which is late. The measurable signs are bleeding, bad breath, receding gums and pockets that get deeper year over year.
We numb the area first, clean the root surfaces, and then set a maintenance interval, usually every three or four months, because the pockets refill faster than a normal six-month rhythm can handle.

The early stage, gingivitis, is fully reversible with a cleaning and better home care. Once bone has been lost, that's permanent, but the disease can be stopped and held stable indefinitely with deep cleaning and three or four month maintenance visits. Earlier is genuinely better.
We numb each area completely before starting, so the appointment itself shouldn't hurt. Afterwards, gums are often tender for a day or two and teeth can feel sensitive to cold for a few weeks as the roots are exposed to a cleaner environment. Over-the-counter pain relief is usually enough.
Most people have the mouth treated in two visits, one side each, about a week or two apart. Severe cases are sometimes split into four. We re-measure four to six weeks later, and from then on you switch to maintenance cleanings every three or four months.
A routine cleaning works above and just below the gum line. When pockets are five millimetres deep, the tartar sits on root surfaces a routine cleaning cannot reach, and polishing the top doesn't stop the infection underneath. Treating it as routine lets the bone loss continue.
Gum tissue that has receded does not regrow on its own, and the bone underneath doesn't either. Treatment stops further loss and reduces inflammation, so gums often look tighter and less puffy. For significant recession, grafting is an option we can discuss and refer for.
